Game Jam Post Mortem

After a day of sleep, I feel ready to write a post mortem about the game jam.
I used the Clockify app to track where I spent my time and have attached both a summary pdf and a detailed csv.
The most time was spent programming (49%), Art (18%) and on Music (12%)- which is what I expected.

Overall- I am proud of what I was able to accomplish.

Art

I was pleased with how the art turned out. I chose a slime because I thought that would be easiest to animate in such a short time.
I also simplified all of the shading to randomly highlight the top-left parts and randomly shade the bottom right parts- and it looks good; it was also very easy to do.

It almost seems as if it was easier to just make UI components instead of searching endlessly for free ones I could use that I was happy with.

Music

I am also happy with the music. O_o It is still stuck in my head. Not sure if I made an ear worm or if I listened to it too much. I like to think my music theory study paid off. Next time, I would like to make different songs- not just 1 song skinned with different instruments (knowing what instruments I have better will come with time; a lot of time was wasted searching through all my packs for different sounds).

I would also like to make my own Sound Effects. This time- I just used free ones from online, but I would like to try making them myself.

Level Design

I do wish I had spent more time on level design- I was luck to at least have an accomplishable goal (get the key; simple obstacles on the way to it; unlock it to get the teddy bear). I don't feel like the game was very fun- because all it was is mechanics and dialog. I tried to rush together some combinations of the game mechanics at the very end- but it's still not enough.

Next time, I want to leave more time for level design.

Dialog System

I am proud of what I was able to accomplish with the dialog system. It took WAAAAAAY too much time to do though.

Friday evening and almost all of Saturday were spent trying to figure out the dialog system- I thought it would be straightforward to implement, because Aarthaficial's other project, Motion Canvas, was very easy for me to pick up and start using. The difference here though is that project is mature and well documented- where as Typewriter is undocumented and in it's infancy.
It is very powerful and cleaver- but it took me a large amount of time to understand how to implement it.

A better approach would have been to not try learning an unknown package during the game jam and instead stick to concepts and assets I already know.
Contrary to that though- I also implemented a mini map by following this video and it was done in about 20 minutes. Making the chat bubble was also a new thing I learned to do by following this video. In both those cases though- the new thing did not take much time to learn and implement.

I started playing Pikmin 4 (I've been saving it for after the game jam; all my time has been going to learning new things). Playing through their tutorial level gave me lots of ideas on improvements I could do and different ways I could use Typewriter. The package is also in it's infancy right now and will get much better as it matures.

Overall- I'm happy I got to try using Typewriter; but I wish I had learned to use it before the game jam instead of during it.

Twitch Streaming

For the first Day and a half- I tried to stream on Twitch. I'm not too photogenic, so I learned how to make a Vtuber avatar and used that instead of a face cam.
It was lots of fun and I feel I was more productive when I had the stream on than not (Maybe that is unrelated though and it was actually me being more productive with plenty of sleep- lol).

Unfortunately, it kept crashing because Streamlabs was fighting for computer resources with Unity. So, I stopped so I could not have things run at half capacity.

I would like to try doing it again though- so I bout a 2TB Internal SSD for my computer to use exclusively for Game Development (Now Unity would not be on the same drive as streamlabs)- also all of my asset files would not be on a Spinning harddrive- so I hopefully won't have to wait so long for things to load.
I have 2 more slots for RAM, so if that does not fix things I could try shoving more RAM cards in there- but that looks a bit pricy.
I could also upgrade my CPU to something with more cores- but that also looks a but expensive, so I'm going to see if the SSD fixes things.

I might update this post with a highlights reel from twitch- but at least a screenshot.
